SK Telecom is going to work with ThorDrive, which was established by Suh Seung-woo, one of South Korea's top experts in self-driving technology, to provide 5G self-driving services in South Korea.
SK Telecom announced that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with ThorDrive in Las Vegas on the afternoon of January 9 (U.S. time) for development of self-driving businesses and cooperation in technologies. SK Telecom CEO Jang Yoo-sung and founder Suh Seung-woo attended the signing ceremony.
SK Telecom and ThorDrive are planning to build self-driving shuttles in downtown Seoul and supply self-driving robot taxis for the weak traffic in mountainous regions.
The two companies are also planning to commercialize last mile self-driving delivery that is linked to logistics and delivery businesses.
To this end, SK Telecom is planning to upgrade 5G Vehicle to Everything (V2X), HD map update, FMS and Fleet Management Service.
ThorDrive will be in charge of developing self-driving technologies and software, upgrading self-driving solutions, and supplying and modifying self-driving cars.
SK Telecom said that cooperation with experts such as ThorDrive is essential to lead self-driving field where fierce competition is taking place.
SK Telecom also said that it will work with various partners with expertise in mobility field to establish an ecosystem for self-driving technology.
