Shin Hanul nuclear reactors

Regarding the controversy over the resumption of the construction of Shin Hanul 3-4 nuclear reactors, which the government decided to scrap, Cheong Wa Dae said on Jan. 14 that it is not the time necessary for an additional discussion.

"I think that the nuclear reactor issue has been settled through the discussion by the Social Debate Committee," a Cheong Wa Dae spokesman said on the same day.

It confirmed that there is no change of the government's decision to scrap the construction of additional nuclear power plants, including the Shin Hanul 3-4 nuclear power plants, except the Shin Kori 5-6 reactors that were resumed after passing through the public debate process.

Last year, the government propelled the President Moon Jae-in's campaign promise to stop construction of the Shin Kori 5-6 reactors, but decided later to resume the construction in the face of the backlash from the nuclear energy industry and some local residents.

Meanwhile, Rep. Song Young-gil of the ruling Democratic Party of Korea said at an event held by the Korea Nuclear Energy Industry Association on Jan. 11, "It is necessary to consider ways to stop the old nuclear and thermal power and to swap them with the Shin Hanul 3-4 nuclear reactors."
