FREMONT, Calif., Jan. 24, 2019 -- Delta, a global provider of power and thermal management solutions, announced today that its Americas headquarters in Fremont, Calif. has achieved the First Place Honor Award in the National Institute of Building Sciences' 2018 Beyond Green™ High Performance Building and Community Awards. This prestigious award recognizes the unique eco-friendly features and net-zero energy design of the LEED Platinum-certified facility, enabled partly through the integration of Delta's own smart energy-saving systems, including building automation, elevator energy regeneration, electric vehicle (EV) charging, green data center, LED lighting, and solar PV energy generation.

"This was an ambitious project that we hope can be emulated by other organizations throughout California, the United States and the world," said M.S. Huang, president of Delta Electronics (Americas). "Corporate social responsibility has long been a vital component of our business model. As part of our mission, Delta has promoted green building concepts since 2006, creating 27 eco-friendly facilities around the globe to date. The Americas headquarters is a living testament that eco-friendly facilities are the foundations of sustainable cities."

"Delta's commitment to its community and employees through this high-performance building is evident," said Nancy McNabb, AIA, Beyond Green™ juror and principal at McNabb & Associates. "Demonstrating how its products can contribute to high-performance buildings across the country is equally admirable."

Completed in October 2015, the LEED Platinum-certified building was carefully designed with functionality, sustainability, aesthetics and employee comfort in mind, with the ultimate goal of achieving net-zero energy through a variety of innovative energy-saving systems and solutions, including:

  • A 616kW rooftop PV system featuring Delta's high-efficiency inverters powers the facility. The installation of a 500kW bi-facial carport PV system in 2019 will further boost energy generation.
  • Variable frequency drives manufactured by Delta are critical components in the facility's HVAC system, which is supported by a geothermal heat exchange system that circulates 12,000 gallons of water through 92 miles of pipes and reduces HVAC-related energy consumption by up to 60 percent.
  • The campus also features Delta's LED lighting products, which save roughly 50 percent more energy than traditional luminaires.
  • A green data center with annual power usage effectiveness (PUE) as low as 1.37, enabled with Delta's energy-efficient InfraSuite Datacenter Solution.
  • Delta Energy Online energy monitoring software.
  • Nineteen Delta EV chargers (AC EVSE and fast DC) to promote e-mobility among employees.
  • A 140,000-gallon rainwater harvesting system to irrigate landscaping and for toilets, with uncollected rain water being directed to a bioswale.
  • In addition, 20 percent of the building materials were reclaimed.

Collectively, Delta's certified green buildings worldwide conserved 14.9 million kWh of electricity in 2017, compared with traditional designs. This figure translates to a reduction of CO2 emissions by 9,268 metric tons. Delta was recognized last week at the National Institute of Building Sciences' Annual Reception and Banquet, held in conjunction with the Building Innovation 2019 Conference & Expo in Washington, D.C.

The National Institute of Building Sciences organizes the Beyond Green™ High- Performance Building & Community Awards every year. This unique program recognizes the initiatives that shape, inform and catalyze the high-performance building market, as well as the real-world application of high-performance design and construction practices. The Institute's Beyond Green™ High-Performance Building and Community Awards Program relies on the concepts embodied in the whole building design objectives to produce high-performance buildings.
