HPC-AI Advisory Council Announces Recruitment for the 2nd APAC HPC-AI Competition

2019 APAC HPC-AI Competition set to open in Singapore, bringing together top teams to showcase state-of-the-art HPC and AI technologies

BEIJING, Feb. 1, 2019 -- The HPC-AI Advisory Council, a leading organization dedicated to high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) research, education and outreach, and the National Supercomputing Centre (NSCC) Singapore announced the official recruitment for the second APAC HPC-AI Competition that will start on March 12, 2019 and continue through until August 2019. The competition, open to all universities and technical institutions / teams in the APAC region, will address challenges around AI development and testing, as well as high-performance computing workloads. The winning team will be invited to Germany to participate the ISC 2020 Student Cluster Competition.

Organizers of the competition encourage teams from the APAC region to come up with innovative solutions to solve the challenges in HPC and AI area, as well to explore new tasks that foster international exchange in both areas. To take home top honors, the teams must showcase systems of their own design, adhering to strict competition rules with the aim of achieving the highest level of performance across a series of standard HPC and AI benchmarks testing and applications.

In the first APAC HPC-AI Competition held in 2018, eighteen teams from eight countries including China, Singapore, Japan, Korea and Thailand outperformed regarding both technical prowess and team spirit. Among them, the team from China Tsinghua University won the first prize with unanimous recognition of tech pros from all over the world. As a result, most members from the team were preemptively recruited by well-known Internet companies.

This year, in addition to technical experts from the HPC-AI Advisory Council, some leading authorities from internationally renowned universities, like Ohio State University and the University of Massachusetts Boston, National Supercomputing Centre (NSCC) in Singapore and Pawsey Supercomputing Centre in Australia, have been invited to join the judging committee. Industrial experts from companies such as NVIDIA and Mellanox will join as well. Moreover, the competition is supported by the world's leading technology companies including SenseTime, Mellanox, Excelero, WekaIO and E8, who will jointly face the new challenges in HPC and AI area.
