Singori Nuclear Power Plant No. 4

As the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC) approved the operation of Singori Nuclear Power Plant No. 4, which was built in Seosaeng-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan City City, an environmental group has raised questions about procedures and safety, and demanded that the operation approval be revoked.

However, residents of Seosaeng-myeon welcomed the decision, expecting the revitalization of the regional economy stemming from the influx of population.

The NSSC approved the operation permit on Feb. 1 on condition that the safety of Sin-gori No. 4 be strengthened. It is the first time for the Moon Jae-in government to grant the operation of new nuclear power plant since its inauguration.

The commission has suggested three conditions, including submitting a "risk analysis report" in case more than one device is malfunctioned due to fire.

Singori No. 4, which has 1.4 million kilowatts in facilities capacity, will be tested and operated in September and October. The operation of Singori No. 4 will increase the number of nuclear power plants that will be operated in South Korea to 24.

The Korea Federation for Environmental Movements (KFEM), however, said on Feb. 7 that it was allowed to operate the program while the conditions were unresolved. "They have not properly verified issues regarding earthquake safety and nuclear plant safety (concentration of nuclear power plants). Accordingly, we request that the operation permit be revoked," the KFEM said.

On the other hand, residents of Seosaeng-myeon welcomed the permit, saying that the operation of Singori No. is expected to stimulate the local economy due to population inflow and an increase in subsidies for nuclear power plants.
