KT is applying and testing mesh structure to 5G backbone network

KT announced on February 12 that it has applied a mesh structure that connects major cities in the country directly to 5G backbone network for the first time in Korea to provide high-quality 5G services.

For 5G, transmission speed of 20Gbps, which is up to 20 times faster than LTE, and delay time of one-tenth is required.

To minimize delays in these backbone networks and provide high-quality, ultra-low delay 5G services, KT applied a mesh structure to 5G backbone networks for the first time in the country and dramatically reduced traffic transmission delays between regions.

Current wired and wireless telecommunication network that includes LTE does not have direct connection between regions due to traffic processing structure.

Previously, traffic between Busan and Gwangju had to be processed through the Seoul Metropolitan Area Center.

As a result, traffic delivery distance was increased and delay of transmission was inevitable.

To solve this problem, KT's mesh structure that is applied to 5G backbone network is a mesh-type structure that connects directly to major regional centers in South Korea.

The application of this structure creates direct links between major regional centers across the country, so direct processing between regions will be possible without passing through the Seoul Metropolitan Area

For example, there was a delay of about 16 ms when traffic between Busan and Gwangju was processed. Under KT's structure, delay time of up to 63% is reduced due to transmission delay of about 6ms.

"With this 5G backbone network Mesh structure, we will provide fast communication services that customers can feel in real life in the 5G era," said Suh Chang-seok, executive director of KT's Network Strategy Headquarters.
