KEPCO

KEPCO has developed an environmental monitoring system that monitors changes in the environment around offshore wind farms for the first time in Korea, a KEPCO spokesman said on March.

It has been also applying the system to the actual sites for offshore wind power in the southwestern sea from February 2019. The environment monitoring system developed by KEPRI, a corporate R&D subsidiary of KEPCO, is a system that utilizes radar, sound detectors and unmanned ships to observe environmental information such as waves, currents, weather conditions and water quality within a radius of 4km and utilize observed information to operate wind farms.

The above collected information is important data related to the life of the wind power generator, which enables stable and economical operation of the offshore wind farm.

Until now, the observation work of marine wind farms has been carried out by humans on site, but the safety of the surveyors has been secured due to unmanned observation activities, the spokesman said.

Kim Suk-cheol, president of KEPRI, said, "KEPCO is planning to efficiently implement the operation of wind resources through the monitoring system that it has developed, and we expect it to contribute to the construction of new wind farms in Korea."
