On March 26, President Oh Sung-mok of KT's network division explained about 5G network technology.

Ahead of the start of 5G commercial service, KT announced on March 26 an era of 'superpower 5G' that came to reality by introducing KT's 5G network strategy and key 5G technologies.

Increase user convenience with 'Korea's Up to 5G Coverage

To provide maximum performance of 5G services to as many customers as possible, KT is going to establish 'maximum 5G coverage' in South Korea that takes into account not only population and trend but also major transportation routes and start commercial services in April.

In time for the launch of commercial services in April, KT has completed the establishment of 5G networks in 70 large shopping malls and department stores nationwide, which are some of the capital city, six metropolitan cities and 85 cities.

In addition, KT 5G users will also be able to enjoy 5G services on long-distance travel sections by establishing 5G networks on major mobile routes such as the KTX‐SRT ground section, the entire highway section and six airports across the country.

KT has also completed the construction of 5G coverage at 464 university campuses and nearby areas, as well as Ulsan Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hwaseong K-City. It plans to secure 5G coverage in most of the 85 cities and major buildings, including subways, government offices and university hospitals, including the Seoul metropolitan area, by the end of this year.

'Extreme Low Delay 5G Network' based on 8 Edge Communication Centers

KT explained that KT's 5G users can enjoy ultra-low delay 5G service evenly anywhere in South Korea based on the country's largest 5G edge telecommunication center.

Current mobile telecommunication businesses have generally improved quality of their users by increasing bandwidth and reducing "latency". However, due to limitations in improving quality of feeling through increased bandwidth, 5G is focusing on reducing latency.

For example, when loading a webpage that requires approximately 3MB of data to be received, it actually takes about 100 iterations, and the latency that occurs between them will determine the overall web page loading time. This minimized the latency on the network can significantly improve user experience quality.

KT has established "5G Edge Communication Center" at 8 locations nationwide by applying edge computing technology that can reduce latency of transmission.

Meanwhile, KT said it will apply the world's first battery-saving technology (C-DRX) and new security technologies "GiGA Steattth" and "Network Sliding" to 5G.
