Hyundai Engineering & Construction (Hyundai E&C) said on April 2 that it held an opening ceremony for the Qatar National Museum in Doha on April 27.
Qatar's King Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Qatar National Museum Commissioner Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani attended the opening ceremony.
Hyundai E&C won a $434 million project ordered by Qatar Museum Authority in September 2011. The project aims to build a museum with a floor space of 46,596 square meters and a basement floor to the south and north of the old royal palace, which was used as a national museum in the center of the capital city of Doha.
The exterior was joined by 316 circular panels, making the entire building a geometric shape of a curve. Inside, there are all kinds of panels and stairs that are twisted into the interior instead of columns that usually support the building.
Jean Nouvel, representing France, participated in the design. Jean Nouvel won the Pritzker Architecture Prize, dubbed the Nobel Prize in architecture.
The motif that Jean Nouvel tried to design the Qatar National Museum is Desert Rose. Desert rose refers to a mass of rose-shaped sand that is made from sediment as the sea water trapped in the water evaporates.
To enhance the degree of completion of the Qatar National Museum, Hyundai E&C has introduced the world's first state-of-the-art construction management technique, which will be conducted with 3D BIM (Building Information Modeling), in the entire process of construction.
"We have pride that I have successfully completed the Qatar National Museum, which will become a global landmark beyond Qatar," a Hyundai E&C official said.
