Korea Post of the Ministry of Science and ICT, led by President Kang Seong-ju, said on May 2 that the Smart City project jointly pushed by Sejong Post Office and Sejong City won the Smart 50 Awards at the Smart Cities Connect Conference & Expo held in Denver, Colorado, the U.S. for April 1 to 4. The event  was organized by the Smart Cities Connect Media & Research.

The Smart 50 Awards annually selects 50 of the most innovative smart projects in the world and present awards to them. They will be selected from five categories: community participation, digital transformation, smart mobility, urban infrastructure and urban operation.

Korea Post was selected with the "smart city project for cooperation between Sejong Post Office and Sejong City" in the urban infrastructure sector.

Korea Post signed a business agreement with Sejong City to build a "smart postal city" in March last year. Since then, it has been working together to realize a smart city.

Sejong Post Office set up a smart mailbox so that residents can find their mail at any time. It has also been test-running seven eco-friendly ultra-small electric vehicles since last year and plans to introduce 25 more this year.

In places where accessibility to a post office is low, postal service was provided by establishing an unmanned post office at a local complex community center.

The Smart 50 Awards is meaningful in that Korea Post actively responded to technological innovation, including merging mail with the fourth industrial revolution, helping people's lives and contributing to the community and helping them realize a well-to-do society, a Korea Post spokesman said.

"We will make efforts to promote people's real life by combining future technologies such as the fourth industrial revolution technology with postal service. At the same time, we will go all-out to herald Korea's excellent postal service to the world through international exchanges in the smart city field such as the Smart 50 Awards," said Korea Post President Kang.
