Merck is a science and technology company, leading the way in innovative materials that enable design enhancement, process efficiency, and improved visual experience in displays. Their commitment to finding sophisticated solutions and applications, in close partnership with their customers, have made them the leading suppliers in the displays market. The company has invested heavily in Asia, with a doubling of their application lab capacity in Korea in recent years.

Dr. Michael Heckmeier, Executive Vice President and Head of Display Solution Business Unit for Performance Materials of Merck KGaA is proud of his company’s innovation and cutting edge technology in this vibrant and dynamic field. Korea IT Times was able to ask him a few questions regarding the company’s most recent innovations.

Q:  What is 8K?

A:  8k is a new TV experience with a 4 times higher display resolution that offers clearer pictures, real-life colors, brighter whites, deeper blacks, and vivid and dynamic images. Thanks to these features, content on an 8k TV set can be watched from a close distance for an immersive viewing experience.

Q:  What are 8K challenges and how has Merck overcome them?

A:  One of the biggest challenges related to the production of 8K display materials is the increased light-modulating area. Today’s displays consist of pixels which have areas that can be light up, but also some non-lighting, black areas. Display makers try to increase the light-modulating area as much as possible in order to achieve maximum brightness and energy efficiency. With continuous innovation and thanks to our strong experience in the industry, we have developed various display materials which address the challenge of increased light area and which we now lever into the new TV standard.

Q:  Why has been the impetus for Merck’s focus on 8K?

A:  As a leading science and technology company with a long-standing track of quality and innovation in the display industry, we want to continue contributing to the constant evolution of displays in close collaboration with our customers. We are proud to enable 8K and other emerging display trends.

Q:  How are materials from Merck contributing to 8K development?

A:  A leap forward in higher resolution large display areas requires much higher transmission levels, enhanced motion picture performance and efficient energy consumption. In a nutshell, our materials contribute to the development of 8K because they provide significant transmission improvement and high resolution (Liquid Crystals), improved color purity, efficiency and lifetime (OLED materials), and improved pixel and backplane layouts (Photoresists and Siloxanes).

Q:  How different is Merck from other companies in 8K development?

A:  Our unrivalled breadth of product, our deep industry understanding, and specialist expertise help our customers to advance innovations like 8K. For decades, we have consistently provided disruptive innovation and materials for the display industry and are well positioned to continue to do so. Our strong commitment to contributing to the evolving future of displays has led to stronger long-term partnerships which, in turn have led tomore reliable and faster outcomes.
