Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong met with former U.S. President George W. Bush during his visit to South Korea on May 22 to discuss recent global issues.

The meeting was held behind closed doors. It was the first of its kind in four years since Bush's visit to Seoul in October 2015 to attend the opening ceremony of the Presidents Cup.

Lee met with Bush alone for 30 minutes in the afternoon. Lee is said to have asked former President Bush for solutions and advice on the global industrial environment, where uncertainties are growing recently.

In addition, he reportedly expressed his views on Samsung Electronics' future growth business and his own opinions as well.
Bush, who came to Korea to attend the memorial service for former President Roh Moo-hyun, had an exclusive meeting with Lee as his first schedule, not to meet with a government official.

Analysts say the two-generation ties between Lee and Bush were behind the Seoul meeting in four years.
Samsung Electronics set up its first overseas semiconductor plant in Austin, Texas, in 1996, establishing ties with the Bush family.

Chairman Lee Kun-hee met former President George H.W. Bush, who was in office in February 1992, for 40 minutes at a Los Angeles hotel and discussed investment plans in the U.S. before completing the project.

Bush, then governor of Texas, attracted the Austin Semiconductor Factory after aggressive efforts to attract a foreign company, and later attended the completion ceremony in 1998.

In addition, Samsung Electronics' "three-year investment in nanotech" event held at its Austin plant in 2003 was attended by his father, former President George H.W. Bush.

Meanwhile, the vice chairman held his third foreign top-notch personnel meeting this year alone. Following an invitation to a state luncheon by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Cheong Wa Dae in February, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates visited Samsung Electronics' Hwaseong semiconductor plant during his visit to Seoul in the same month and met with Lee.

In October last year, he also met with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc in Hanoi, Vietnam.
