Samsung Electronics topped the 5G telecommunication equipment market share, beating major global mobile communication equipment makers such as Huawei, Nokia and Ericsson.
According to a report by Samsung Electronics and the U.S. IT market research company Dell'Oro on May 30, it had 37% of 5G RAN sales from the fourth quarter of last year to first quarter of this year. Huawei came next with 28 percent, followed by Ericsson with 27 percent and Nokia with 8 percent.
Samsung Electronics had preempted the 5G NR RAN market in terms of sales shares in the second quarters. 5G NR is a standard that was defined by 3GPP, an international standardization organization for mobile telecommunication, to spread 5G technologies in industries such as automobiles, health and energy.
"The 5G NR is accelerating at a faster-than-expected pace and already controled 5 to 10 percent of the total RAN market in the first quarter," Dell'Oro said. "Massive MIMO for high-capacity data transmission accounted for more than 80 percent of 5G NR sales in the fourth quarter of 2019."
"The U.S., Japan and Western countries have been boycotting Huawei's telecommunication equipment as Japanese mobile network provider Softbank decided to exclude Huawei's equipment for 5G base stations in the wake of the U.S.-China trade war. It will be a favorable news for Samsung Electronics that has taken an initiative in the 5G equipment market," said an industry official.
