Recently investment for information and communication has slowed down, and it jeopardizes the position of Korea and weakens the competitiveness of wireless service. Since the demand for wireless service is expected to mushroom, we cannot be sluggish anymore. Otherwise, one day we might just look back and talk about the good old days when we stood as the number one communication infrastructure country in the world. It is time to figure out comprehensive competitiveness measures for new industry creation and innovative changes to firm Korea's stand as an Internet powerhouse.

Primarily, building up the wireless and mobile infrastructure is needed. It will enhance the utilization of e-government, u-city, health care, education and business. It also helps to resolve problems in areas where houses are underserved by wireless networks. And for this, Wi-Fi, WiMAX, 4G and Broadband wireless infrastructure roadmaps should be created.

Korea Institute of Information and Telecommunications Facilities Engineering Summer Seminar 2010

While concern has emerged across the country, the "Korea Institute of Information and Telecommunications Facilities Engineering Summer Seminar 2010" was held on 3rd of June at Seoul Education Culture Hall. It was organized by KT, SK Telecom, Samsung Electronics Ssangyong ICC and LG-Nortel and sponsored by Korea IT Times, Etnews and Hightec. At this seminar, academia, research institutes, industry and government experts were present to discuss  the vision of Korea's wireless communications infrastructure and application services. The five guests presented the plan for wireless infrastructure and applications services such as intelligence communications. An expert from KCC (Korea Communications Commission) addressed the 'Future Network 2020 strategy' about overcoming today's network limitations and to accommodate the new convergence services.

As the trend of traffic is changing from voice centric to data centric, the demand for and traffic of Smartphones are going to increase as well as mobile broad band. KT predicts that data traffic is expected to grow 44 times in two years compared to 2009. Choi Byung Jin, Manager, Wireless Research Institute of KT said, "To prepare the near future, SK possesses a 3W network which is WCDMA, WiBro and WiFi and we plan to expand coverage. And LTE will take the important role in the network. Since LTE has a simpler structure than others, the operating speed is faster." Choi expected that LTE and LTE advanced network expansion will be processed progressively, and WiBro and Wifi's Traffic Offloading would be continued for some time for distribution of data traffic. He also explained about CCC (Cloud Communication Center) which is a combination of centralized digital unit and remote RF Unit. It has many beneficial factors such as low on power consumption and site rental cost, great capacity and high quality via internal joint processing inside DU center.

Yu Ji Chang, Team leader, Network Strategy Office of SK Telecom has a similar opinion with Choi toward Global trends and LTE. And Yu said, "SK Telecom currently have 2g and 3g networks, but have a nationwide network, data services and preparation for active enforcement investment continues. "  He explained that in the future, SK Telecom will maintain CDMA as the current quality control form for customers.  WCDMA capacity will be increased and HSAP + evolution, WiBro / WifF will be positioned and push ahead. These characteristics utilize infrastructure which will retain a Multi-Network Portfolio. And next, Kwack Jun-young, team leader of the access network division of LG Telecom presented the vision of LG. Kwack shared views with previous presenters about the trends of technology and LTE. Since LG acquired the 800MHz frequency allocation last April, he said that, "We keep trying to figure out how to use frequency more efficiently. Therefore, LG has developed In-building repeaters and facilities to accommodate quick and cost-effective next generation broadband network operating were also is under construction to expand it. We also plan to build a nationwide network in the low-band, quickly, to provide diverse and opened services." LG will contribute to the domestic 4G technology and telecommunications industries with a next generation network. Meanwhile, KT and SKT obtained for each 900 MHz and 2.1 GHz Kim Joon Hwan, Director of Technical Strategy Team in INFOMARK briefed the gathering on the character of wireless infrastructures WiFi, WiBro, CDMA200/WCDMA and LTE (Long Term Evolution). INFOMARK is the company where have invented 'Egg,' which is a portable Wi-Fi router in cooperation with KT.

Joo Seong-soon, Director of ETRI explained M2M, Machine-to-machine services which has been used actively. At the moment the service, based on the GSM network, Telematics, Automatic Meter Reading, remote meter management services. And now M2M is changing as MTC (Machine Type Communications). MTC involves one or more entitles that do not necessarily need human interaction. MTC is low mobility, time controlled, time tolerant, packet switched only and mobile originated only. And above all, MTC monitoring is the special feature of MTC. It is not intended to provide functionality to detect events that may possibly be the result of theft or vandalism. He said "MTC is in the draft status at the moment and it will take some time to be specific functionally."

Last but not least, Hur Sung-wook, Director of the Network Planning and Protection Division of KCC talked about the "Future Network 2020 strategy" (A.K.A. FN2020). The paradigm of the internet is in transition throughout the world. Korean Government has set the Future Internet as a national agenda and it will be the long-term strategy for the government. However, they face some challenges, intelligence services, R&C eco-system, innovation and globalizations. In particular, he emphasized the global wised research and cooperation. And he said "for the next 10 years, I hope everyone in this seminar stays involved."
