A representative council of residents of radon detected apartments has applied to the Korea Consumer Protection Board for the relief of radon damages against POSCO E&C.
According to Rep. Lee Jeong-mi of the Justice Party, a member of the National Assembly's Environment and Labor Committee, the residents of apartments belong to consumers who use apartments provided by POSCO E&C, and have the right to receive proper compensation from radon harm to life, body or property, and the right to spend money in a safe and pleasant environment.
If the application for the damage relief fails to reach an agreement between the resident representatives' council and POSCO E&C within 30 days, the dispute settlement process of the Consumer Dispute Settlement Committee will be carried out.
After moving in the apartment in the second half of last year, the residents' council said its own indoor radon measurement found radon 418 becquerels, which are three times the WHO standard, and had been at odds with POSCO E&C for six months to resolve the radon issue.
"The Environment Ministry is hesitant to solve the problem of the fear of radon in apartments including POSCO E&C," Lee said.
"The Fair Trade Commission should urgently ask the relevant ministries to correct the fear of collecting and destroying the radon stone in order to protect the lives and bodies of the people from the fear of the radon."
