Police investigating the embezzlement case of medical fee refund at Gachon University Gil Medical Center raided the Gil hospital for the second time after finding out the circumstances of the additional crime.
The Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency booked without physical detention a 48-year-old former head of the administration division and two other staff at Gil Medical Center on charges of business embezzlement, and raided the Gil hospital for the second time on July 10.
The data that the police seized on the day reportedly included documents related to the refund of medical expenses in the past.
The division chief and others are suspected of misappropriating some of the medical expenses paid to Gil Medical Center between 2013 and 2014 without returning them to patients even after receiving a refund from the National Health Insurance Service.
They allegedly misappropriated the refund of medical expenses they received from the National Health Insurance Service during the period from 2016 to last year.
"I used 26 million won out of the medical fee refund for dinner," the division chief said in a police investigation, partially admitting to the charges. Police believe the embezzled amount will reach hundreds of millions of won.
Prior to the raid, police detected the circumstances of their crime on April 12 and searched the administration department and computer room of Gil Medical Center to secure various materials related to the refund.
Police are expanding their investigation into the embezzlement case, including whether they received orders from their superiors.
