Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP) will invite nuclear power plant officials from Eastern Europe to hold a workshop in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) from Aug. 5-9.

The workshop, which will be held at the KHNP's Human Resources Development Institute located in Ulsan, was made at the request of the IAEA, which highly evaluated the KHNP's overall technological capabilities, including its capacity to build and operate nuclear power plants.

Some 40 nuclear power plant operators, regulators and suppliers from eight Eastern European countries, including Romania, Hungary, Ukraine, Armenia, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Slovenia and Croatia, as well as the KHNP and IAEA, will participate.

There are many nuclear power plant operators located in Eastern Europe, and there is a high demand for improvement of existing nuclear power plant facilities and construction of new nuclear power plants.

The workshop focuses on "nuclear knowledge management," a necessary capacity to build nuclear power plants efficiently and economically and operate them safely. This is an issue that has been emerging globally due to the prolonged life span of new nuclear power plants (more than 60 years), the application of digital technology in the fourth industrial revolution, and the increasing need for knowledge transfer due to diversification of nuclear power plant business structures, and it is also receiving a lot of attention from global nuclear power plant operators such as IAEA and KHNP.

Through the workshop, KHNP plans to share more than 40 years of its experience and know-how in operating nuclear power plants with the world's nuclear power industry and contribute to enhancing the safety of domestic nuclear power plants through technical exchanges with international organizations and overseas nuclear power plant operators.

Furthermore, it plans to secure a competitive edge in the global nuclear power market by promoting the excellence of Korea's nuclear power plant construction and operation technologies and lay the groundwork for overseas projects.
