Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP) said on Aug. 26 (U.S. time) that the new light water reactor APR1400 nuclear power plant has finally obtained a design certification (DC) from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
APR1400 acquired Standard Design Approval (SDA) in September last year and was later added to the U.S. Code of Federal Regulation’s Appendix after about 11 months of legalization. This means that the APR1400 nuclear power plant can be built and operated in the U.S.
It also won the certification from European Utility Requirements (EUR) in October 2017.
The APR1400 nuclear power plant project to acquire DC from NRC began in December 2014 with a joint application from KHNP and Korea Electric Power Corp.(KEPCO)
KHNP organized the project as the main management agency, and Korea Electric Power Technology, KEPCO Nuclear Fuel and Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction participated in the project.
