It has been confirmed that Mercedes-Benz Korea is in the process of recalling its new SUV "The New GLE," priced at 110.5 million won, after defects in production related to vehicle safety were found, the Chosun Biz reported on Sept. 10.
In the process, Mercedes-Benz Korea was found to have not properly informed Korean consumers of the recall, drawing criticism that it is discriminating against domestic consumers.
According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Mercedes-Benz Korea on Sept. 10, Mercedes-Benz Korea has been recalling a total of 529 units of The New GLE 300d 4matic and the New GLE 450 4matic since Sept. 5. The recall came just two days after they were launched in the Korean market on Sept. 3 due to vehicle defects.
The reason for the recall is poor assembly of air conditioning condensate hoses. There is a danger that water created when the air conditioner is operated could enter the vehicle.
"The leaked air conditioning condensate can cause a short circuit, fire, engine failure or emergency phone system failure," Benz said.
Mercedes-Benz Korea will also carry out a recall of Mercedes-Benz's large SUV "GLS 400d 4matic" on sale due to the same defect.
The problem is that Mercedes-Benz Korea did not properly inform consumers of the recall. The automaker must report to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and inform consumers of any fatal defects related to safety in its vehicles.
The ministry will compile and distribute the data to the media based on the reports. Mercedes-Benz Korea, however, skipped the process as it carried out a recall for defects in it’s the New GLE vehicles, the media reported.
Meanwhile, the media quoted Benz Korea as saying, "We submitted a recall report to the ministry at the end of August (30-31), before the release of The New GLE (New car introduction on Sept. 3), so we skipped the usual process of announcing the recall."
