LG Electronics has submitted a report to the Fair Trade Commission (FTC) on Sept. 19 accusing Samsung Electronics of violating the Display Advertising Act.

LG Electronics claims that the technology called QLED (Quantum dot Light Emitting Diode) was not applied, so Samsung's use of the product name QLED TV is a false overstated advertisement that violates the Display Advertising Act.

LG Electronics further claims that Samsung QLED TVs have added a Quantum-dot film to the current LCD TVs and use liquid crystals that control backlight and quantity of light, which are separate light sources. As a result, it is structurally identical to LCD TVs.

LG Electronics held a technical briefing at LG Twin Tower in Yeouido, Seoul on Sept. 17 to show reporters the quantum dot film that was dismantled from Samsung's QLED TV. "It can't shine on its own only with this film," said Nam Ho-joon, head of LG's Home Entertainment (HE) Research Institute, at the meeting.

LG Electronics has also aired a 75-second ad titled "Have a good knowledge of LG OLED TV, whose dimensions differ from LED TVs,” criticizing Samsung Electronics' QLED TVs.

On the assertion, meanwhile, Samsung Electronics said on Sept. 20, "Samsung Electronics introduced QLED TVs using quantum dot technology in 2017 and has been ranked as the best product in the global TV market for 13 years. We will strictly respond to groundless claims.”

Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics have been fighting each other over the technological edge of QLED and OLED since 2017, and have recently been engaged in a smear campaign against each other over 8K TV technology.

With LG Electronics reporting Samsung Electronics to the FTC, the so-called "TV war" between the two sides is expected to be inevitable.
