In the wake of the government's nuclear phase-out policy, Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) reported net losses of 1.17 trillion won in the first half of this year alone, but it has hired 7,624 people over the past five years.

According to data submitted to Bareunmirae Party lawmaker Kim Sam-hwa from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on Sept. 22, the number of employees at 40 public organizations under the ministry has surged 33.5 percent over the past five years.

This is the result of an increase in the number of new hires and non-regular workers turning into regular workers. The number of new hires has increased rapidly in a short period of time, reducing the capacity for new hires in the future, and also raising concerns over possible side effects in human resource operations such as personnel deficits.

Forty public organizations under the ministry, including KEPCO, employed 25,932 new workers over the past five years from 2015 to this year. In addition, 2,390 workers switched from non-regular workers to regular ones. The number of full-time employees at public institutions has increased by 28,322 over the past five years.

The largest number of new hires in five years was KEPCO. Affected by the government's nuclear phase-out policy, KEPCO reported net loss of 1.17 trillion won in the first half of this year alone, but it has hired 7,624 employees (including those who will be hired in the second half) over the past five years.

Due to this rapid increase in employment, 35.6 percent of KEPCO's 22,099 employees have been employed for less than five years. As a result, their competition for promotion is expected to intensify.

After KEPCO, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co.(KHNP) came in second with 3,678. "The number of workers who retired and moved to other work came to 300 per year, and the number of employees increased by 200 owing to operation of Shin-Kori Units 3 and 4," KHNP said.

However, with the scrapping of the construction of six new nuclear power plants, the capacity to hire workers in the future has to be reduced.

KEPCO KPS (2,218), Korea Electric Safety Corp. (1,238), Korea Gas Corp. (1088), and Kangwon Land (1069) have hired more than 1,000 new workers each over the past five years.
