SK Telecom made an announcement on Oct. 1 that it received the top indoor Wi-Fi network at 'WBA Industry Awards' held in Frankfurt, Germany on Sept. 30 (local time).
The WBA Industry Awards are hosted by the Wireless Broadband Alliance, which is comprised of major global telecommunication businesses such as AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, Qualcomm, Intel, Cisco, and manufacturers of Wi-Fi equipment, and is considered the most prestigious international award ceremony in the field of Wi-Fi.
Organizers said they appreciated SK Telecom's development and commercialization of the next generation Wi-Fi technology "Wi-Fi 6" for the first time in the world and its development of intelligent "wireless mesh" technology that allows customers to use Wi-Fi seamlessly indoors.
“Wi-Fi 6” provides up to 4.8Gbps speed, which is four times faster than the existing speed, and provides excellent quality even when many users are connecting at the same time. Last year, SK Telecom installed "Wi-Fi 6" in traffic-intensive areas such as COEX in Samseong-dong and U Square in Gwangju to improve customer experience quality.
In addition, SK Telecom has developed a "wireless mesh" technology that helps customers use Wi-Fi indoors without interruption. Wireless mesh technology is a technology that installs a number of Wi-Fi devices inside a wide room with many walls and connects each device to the optimal Wi-Fi device depending on customers' location to help them use seamless communication.
"The winning of the award for seven consecutive years at the world's prestigious awards is proof that our technology leadership is globally recognized," said Park Jin-hyo, head of SK Telecom's ICT technology center. "We will continue to develop innovative solutions and equipment to provide the best network service to our customers in the future."
