Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has won an order for large container ships worth 1 trillion won, signaling that it will meet its order target for this year.

SHI said on Oct. 8 that it has won a contract from Evergreen, a Taiwanese shipping company, for about 1.1 trillion won ($920 million) to build six 23,000 TEU container ships.

The new vessel is a super container ship that can carry 23,764 20-foot containers at once, with a length of 400 meters, width of 61.5 meters and height of 33.2 meters. SHI rewrote its world's largest container ship (23,756 loaded capacity) record in July. The ship was delivered to MSC in Switzerland in July this year.

With the deal, SHI is recognized for its quality competitiveness in the large carrier market, with its order backlog of 23,000 TEU-class supercarrier ships increasing to 14 vessels, the world's largest, while also taking a step closer to meeting its order target.

SHI has won orders totaling $5.1 billion so far this year, achieving 65 percent of its target $7.8 billion. By class of ships, there are 14 crude carriers, followed by 11 LNG (liquid natural gas) carriers, six container ships, two petrochemical product carriers, one special ship, and one FPSO (floating production storage and offloading) ship.
