He stressed that CEOs need "design thinking" to solve problems creatively in order to break away from existing practices and innovate the way they work with business models.
Chairman Chey said in his closing speech at the 2019 CEO Seminar held at the Annex Hotel on Jeju Island on Oct. 18, "So far, the CEO has been recognized only as the decision maker and the person in charge, but from now on, he should establish himself as the head designer of the deep change."
"Since all of deep change's tasks such as business model evolution, conversion, expansion, asset efficiency, and securing human capital are challenging, we should not approach them with familiar ideas," he said, stressing the need for design thinking.
The CEO seminar, an annual event for SK Group, was held for three days from Oct. 16 under the theme of "Execute Deep Change, Happiness that Members Create Together."
"Success does not make us happy, but if we are happy, chances of success increase," Chey said. "CEOs should continue to focus on establishing this hypothesis."
"Just as companies have meticulous strategies to generate profits, they need sophisticated strategies and solutions even when pursuing happiness," he said, calling for companies to continue to upgrade their "happiness strategies."
In an era of uncertainty, SK's future is at stake for the speed of digital transitions to lead the deep change and for strengthening human capital through investment in people, Chey said, adding that the company should be fully prepared to ensure corporate sustainability
