Daewoo Engineering & Construction has won a $86 million order to build a casting bed for an immersed tunnel in the southern Iraqi city of Khor Al Zubair.
As part of the infrastructure construction of the new port project to be built in the southern Basra province of Al Faw, the construction project is to be ordered by the General Company for Ports of Iraq (GCPI) to create the prefabrication yard for an immersed tunnel linking Umm Qasr and Al Faw areas. The construction period is 20 months after starting the construction.
This is the fourth order this year in Iraq, following additional breakwater construction in March, the first-phase container terminal construction in April and the entry road construction in August. Its accumulated contract amount is $460 million (550 billion won).
At the GCPI located in Basra on Oct. 19, Dr. Safaa A. J. Al-Fayyadh, president of the GCPI, and Kim Hyung, CEO of Daewoo Engineering & Construction, signed a contract to create the immersed tunnel prefabrication yard in Iraq.
"It is impossible to win a private contract in the international construction market, which usually consists of competing bids, without the owner's trust," a Daewoo official said.
Initially, the Iraqi government tried to build bridges and roads to connect the Umm Qasr and Al Faw areas, but it was reported that the government changed its plan to build an immersed tunnel because of the military and security reasons and Daewoo E&C's reliable ability to build it.
