S-OIL, along with Rehabilitation International Korea, held a launching ceremony for the "Marathon of impression for the disabled" at its headquarters in Mapo, Seoul, on Oct. 31.
The impressive 22-member marathon squad, including team captain Lee Bong-ju, the 2001 Boston Marathon Winner, disabled marathoners and fellow runners, will challenge for the full course and the 15-kilometer course of the 2019 Istanbul International Marathon to be held on Nov. 3.
S-OIL has been sponsoring disabled marathoners' participation in overseas competitions for 14 years since the Singapore International Marathon in 2006 to promote the spirit of challenge and rehabilitation of disabled people and help revitalize rehabilitation sports.
Until this year, it has sponsored 318 participants in competitions held in nine countries including Greece, Germany, Australia, Singapore, the United States and the Netherlands.
"Like the slogan of the event, I hope the event will serve as an opportunity for athletes to move toward the world with greater confidence," said Cho Young-il, CFO of S-OIL. "From now on, we will continue to sponsor disabled athletes to provide them with more opportunities for challenges through an impressive marathon program."
Meanwhile, S-OIL hosted the domestic competition, "The 3rd Marathon of Impression along with S-OIL," in April at the Hangang Park in Yeouido, Seoul, with about 1,600 disabled participants and citizens participating.
