KERI(Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute), the Changwon city, and the University of Waterloo in Canada signed to achieve smart, innovative manufacturing by combining it with the machinery industry and AI technology.

The City of Changwon of South Gyeongsang Province, Mayor Hur Seong-moo, and President of Choe Kyu-ha of KERI set out to conduct joint research on advanced artificial intelligence(AI) of the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. The signing of a memorandum of understanding(MOU) was launched to find new growth engines to revitalize the local industry.

Changwon City has played a pivotal role in Korea's industrial economy as a mecca for the machinery industry for over 40 years since that was designated as a national industrial complex in 1974.

The City of Changwon with KERI as its core organization began the full-fledged work in intelligent electrical technology R & D Zone in June this year through the convergence of electrical technology and the machinery industry.

Canada is one of the world's top three AI powers along with the United States and Japan. Canada is also the birthplace of deep learning that created AlphaGo. Canada is easier joint research and technology adoption compared to other developed countries with higher technology protection barriers. In particular, the AKCSE (Association of Korean Canadian Scientists and Engineers) is activated, enabling practical scientific and technological collaboration.

In addition, The University of Waterloo is Canada's top university in science and engineering, ranking second in the world after MIT in the Silicon Valley reputation survey. Waterloo has the Waterloo AI Institute, the world's leading research institute in applied AI in manufacturing. The Silicon Valley reputation survey, and has the Waterloo AI Institute, the world's leading research institute for applied manufacturing AI. KERI and Changwon City aim to take the lead in establishing the Smart industrial complex through practical cooperation with Waterloo University.

"To revitalize the machinery industry, we need convergence with complexation industrial restructuring that combines high-tech sectors such as AI," said Choe Kyu-ha, president of KERI. And he added, "Through the bilateral network formed by this agreement, Canada's advanced science and technology will be transferred to Korean local companies, paving the way for innovative growth."

As the first step in establishing this cooperation system, KERI and Waterloo Joint Research Center(KWJRC) will set up at both places next year. Both institutions jointly study AI and they can integrate it into the machinery manufacturing industry in Changwon and apply them to local SMEs.

KERI and the City of Changwon also signed an MOU with the AKCSE for cooperation in science and technology. AKCSE is an association that has over 3,000 solid Korean-Canadian scientist networks in various fields, including electricity, electronics, software, robots, semiconductors, Nano, technologies, biomedical, and the environment.

AKCSE plans to serve as a communication channel for Science and Technology between Korea and Canada, and transfer advanced technology to local industries that will lead the era of the fourth industrial revolution through cooperation with KERI and Changwon.
