Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) held a ground-breaking ceremony for a 294 MW solar power plant in Mexico City on Nov. 14 (local time).

The event was attended by some 60 key figures, including KEPCO President Kim Jong-kap, Korean Ambassador to Mexico Kim Sang-il, Mexican Power Exchange President Alfonso Flores and Canadian Solar Development Division President Ismael Guerrero.

KEPCO was selected as the preferred bidder in June of this year for this project ordered by Canadian Solar through competitive bidding, and signed a firm contract in September.

The project is expected to generate a total revenue of 280 billion won by building a solar power plant with a facility capacity of 294 MW in the three regions of Mexico, including the State of Sonora and operating it for 35 years.

KEPCO CEO Kim said in a congratulatory speech, "This solar energy project is significant in that it is KEPCO's first solar energy project and the largest new and renewable development project in Latin America. I am confident that it will contribute to achieving the vision of a mega shift in renewable energy pushed by the Mexican government."

"We are confident that KEPCO will contribute to the de-carbonation of the Mexican government and its response to climate change by using the world's most advanced KEPCO technologies and the digitalization and energy efficiency programs to improve energy efficiency," he added.

KEPCO completed the construction of the Norte II Gas Complex Thermal Power Plant (433MW) in Mexico in December 2013 for commercial operation. With the construction of the new and renewable power plant this time, KEPCO has secured its status as a major Mexican private power generation operator.
