CEO Park Jung-ho of SK Telecom suggested directions for Asian media and contents industries and ecosystems at a gathering of leaders from Asian countries.

He participated as a speaker at the Korea-ASEAN Special Summit "Cultural Innovation Forum" held at BEXCO in Busan on Nov. 25.

Hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the cultural innovation forum is set to share with ASEAN countries on content creation, proliferation and education under the theme of "cultural content," which is considered a global growth engine in the era of the fourth industrial revolution.

Moon Jae-in, the president of Korea, heads of state from Asian countries, domestic and foreign entertainment companies, drama and film producers, broadcasting companies, OTT companies and representatives and officials of Internet platform companies attended the event.

Also featured as forum speakers were SK Telecom President Park Jung-ho, Netflix CEO Netflix Reed Hastings, Big Hit Entertainment CEO Bang Si-hyuk, Asia's leading entertainment firm iME CEO Brian Chow and director Pierre Kopin, who directed the animation "Superbad."

Industry insiders say that it is quite unusual and significant for a CEO of an ICT company to be invited to speak at a large-scale international forum event under the theme of "cultural content."

If Bang Si-hyuk, the CEO of BTS, represents the "Korean Wave" content sector, Park Jung-ho, who has recently been working to revitalize the media industry, including the launch of Korea's largest OTT platform "Wave," is seen as taking on the role of representing the entire media platform and service ecosystem in Korea.

At the meeting, President Park Jung-ho introduced how innovative the 5G, which was the world's first commercialized by SK Telecom in April, can change the overall life and culture. In particular, it predicted that innovation based on 5G ∙ AI technology in media contents and games will bring meaningful growth to Korea-Asean.

He presented the concept of "Asian Movement" beyond "hallyu" and proposed that Asia as a whole join forces to create content that can be shared by the global community based on its own culture.
