KT's satellite subsidiary, KT SAT, has succeeded in exchanging data with the satellite via 5G mobile communication. Its goal is to apply it to actual satellites during the first half of next year through additional verification.

It is predicted that 5G will be able to be used in ships and remote areas of the ocean in the future.

On Nov. 22, KT held a briefing for a group of reporters at its Gwanghwamun office and announced that it succeeded in testing 'Satellite 5G-SAT' technology, which links 5G network with Mugunghwa Satellite No. 6, which is located in space about 36,000 kilometers above the equator, for the first time in the world. To that end, KT Convergence Technology Institute and KT SAT have teamed up.

KT SAT, along with KT Convergence Technology Institute, implemented 5G Edge Cloud media technology using satellite 5G hybrid transmission and satellite communication link (Backhaul).

"5G will have bigger B2B area than B2C in the future, and when combined with satellites, variety of mobile services will be possible in places where network environment is poor such as sea," said Yang Sang-jin, head of KT SAT technical cooperation TF headquarters. KT SAT already operates telecommunication services in Antarctica by linking LTE network to satellites.

"Technology linking satellite and 5G is expected to create a communication environment that does not have gaps between regions in the future and contribute greatly to disaster, emergency communication and contents markets where continuous communication is important," said CEO Han Won-sik of KT SAT.
