LG Display (President Chung Ho-young) once again proved its overwhelming technical prowess with 65-inch Rollable OLED that was developed and commercialized for the first time in the world.
LG Display won the "Presidential Award," the highest award for 65-inch Rollable OLED Panel, at the 2019 Korea Industrial Technology R&D Daejeon & Technology Awards held at COEX in Seoul on Dec. 13.
Based on large OLED source technologies that LG Display has been building so far, it has developed its own roller-blading OLED technologies such as thin glass and polarizing plates optimized for rolling, and special Encapsulation that protects organic matter from outside moisture.
In addition, it actively promoted localization of materials and equipment from the R&D stage of rollable OLED panels, achieving a localization rate of 70 percent, which is the same level as previous large OLEDs.
Rollable OLED panels maximize strengths of OLED, which can be thin and bent due to lack of backlight, and their characteristic is that they can roll panels into the main body while keeping the excellent quality of OLEDs intact.
It is seen as a product that will greatly change its future life by increasing level of space utilization, making it easier to move and install, and adjusting size of screen that is optimized for use purposes.
"This award means that LG Display has been recognized once again for its innovative OLED technology," said Vice-President Oh Chang-ho of LG Display's TV Business Department at the ceremony. "In the future, LG Display will provide new values that are superior to previous displays with OLED."
Meanwhile, LG Display's Rollable OLED panel was first unveiled at the U.S. "CES 2018," the world's largest exhibition, drawing keen attention. LG Electronics also won the 'CES 2020 Best Innovation Award' for 'LG Signature OLED R', the world's first rollable TV that utilizes it.
