LG Electronics has hired a 35-year-old young man who is considered a next-generation leader in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector as an executive-level figure.

LG Electronics announced on Dec. 20 that it will hire Joseph Lim, a 35-year-old computer science professor at the University of Southern California (USC) in the U.S., to research image intelligence at the artificial intelligence research institute. The artificial intelligence research institute is a key research organization under LG Electronics’ chief technology officer (CTO). Professor Joseph Lim is treated at an executive level.

Joseph Lim received a master's and doctorate degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is considered an expert in image intelligence that combines enhanced learning algorithms, deep learning, and computer vision in which computer systems choose the optimal method of learning.

"We expect that Professor Joseph Lim's research field will contribute greatly to evolution, which is one of the three AI-oriented points (evolution, contact and openness) that LG Electronics is aiming for," said an official of LG Electronics.

Noteworthy is that LG Electronics guaranteed Lim's concurrent position. Lim will lead research in the field of image intelligence by traveling between South Korea and the United States while maintaining his USC teaching position.

In May, LG Electronics hired Dr. Darin Graham, a founding member of the global artificial intelligence research institute, and an expert on artificial intelligence networks, to head the artificial intelligence research institute in Toronto, Canada. It also selected 12 AI experts this year through collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Toronto in Canada.

Meanwhile, LG Electronics Research Institute will participate in the process of developing big data such as high-end statistics, machine learning and data modeling at Seoul National University from next year through a recent MOU with Seoul National University.
