Samsung Engineering won an order for a large oil refinery plant in Algeria. Samsung Engineering made an announcement on Jan. 9 that it signed a contract with Sonatrach, Algeria’s largest state-run oil company, for the Hassi Messaoud oil refinery project worth about 4.3 trillion won on Jan. 8.
Samsung Engineering won the project jointly with Spain's Técnicas Reunidas, and Samsung's contract amount is about 1.9 trillion won out of the total contract amount.
The plant, to be built in the Hassi Messaoud region, 600 kilometers southeast of the Algerian capital of Algiers, is a facility to process about 110,000 barrels of crude oil per day.
Samsung Engineering is planning to carry out the entire EPC (Engineering, procurement and construction) process through a batch-turn-key scheme for 52 months. Samsung Engineering will certainly cement its partnership with Sonatrach, Algeria's largest state-run oil company.
As Sonatrach is planning to make large investments in petrochemical fields as well as energy such as oil and gas, it is expected to win related orders in the future.
Samsung Engineering has successfully carried out a number of oil refining projects in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait and Algeria, and has rich experience and high technical skills. It also expects to work with global EPC company Técnicas Reunidas of Spain to spread the risk of carrying out mega projects and maximize synergies.
"As we have solid experience in products, regions and technical skills, we expect to secure stable performance and profitability of the project," a company official said. "By carrying out successful projects, we will solidify our long-term partnership with owners and continue to win linked orders in the future."
