Chung Eui-sun, executive vice chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, expressed his willingness to make technological contributions at the group's level to expand hydrogen electric vehicles and the hydrogen economy.
"Hyundai Motor Group will continue to lower barriers related to the supply of hydrogen electric vehicles by reducing production costs, miniaturizing fuel cell systems and maximizing efficiency, rather than focusing on short-term sales goals," Chung said in a written interview with Hydrogen Council, the global CEO consultative committee.
It is the first time that Chung has interviewed in his title as chairman of the hydrogen committee. The hydrogen committee is a global CEO consultative body launched during the Davos Forum in 2017 to highlight the role of hydrogen in the global energy transition phase.
In the interview, Chung said, "We plan to provide feasible technical solutions and policy proposals from the hydrogen committee in consideration of each country's interest in climate issues," adding, "We will take the lead in climate change, a key global environmental issue, at the Hyundai Motor Group level."
He called the hydrogen city "a stepping stone to a perfect hydrogen society," saying Hyundai could show the public the vision and merits of a hydrogen society. "The hydrogen ecosystem, in which hydrogen production, distribution and utilization are made in one place, will be the fastest way to a truly carbon-free society. There is a need to effectively deliver this message," said Chung.

In addition, Chung said Hyundai plans to provide feasible technical solutions and policy proposals at the hydrogen committee level in consideration of each country's interest in climate issues.
"Since the establishment of the hydrogen committee, we have consistently persuaded industries, the government and the general public that the construction of hydrogen society can be implemented in the near future," Chung said. "We also expressed strong expectations about the hydrogen committee’s first competitive power report on hydrogen costs, which is scheduled to be released in time for the CEO’s general meeting in Paris this month."
"As a leader in hydrogen mobility, Hyundai Motor Group is making efforts to develop and supply reasonably priced hydrogen electric vehicles with a sense of responsibility," he said.
"We will continue to strengthen our technology leadership by reducing production costs, miniaturizing fuel cell systems and maximizing efficiency rather than focusing on short-term sales goals," he said.
