Hyundai Rotem signed an agreement with the Land Transport Authority to supply 186 trains for 358.6 billion won ($300 million) at the headquarters of Land Transport Authority (LTA) in Singapore on February 6.

Jurong is an industrial zone southwest of Singapore, and the Singapore government's recent push to develop a large commercial district and Malaysia in the future. This is where the construction of the station is expected when the Singapore high-speed train project is carried out.

The newly won train will be used for the Jurong area line, a new route to be built in Jurong, and will be opened in 2026. All of the vehicles will be produced at the Changwon plant and will be delivered sequentially from 2024 to 2027.

Hyundai Rotem had won 20 orders for freight cars in Singapore in 1980, 396 heavy water reactors for SMRT trains in 2004 and 924 passenger handle modifications for LTA train in 2013, but this is the first time that Hyundai Rotem has won a contract for the train project.

As the company succeeded in pioneering the market with orders for 186 subway trains in the Jurong area, it can expect to win orders for additional train projects that are expected to be placed in the future.

The 186 train of the Jurong area is an unmanned driving vehicle consisting of one volume at a maximum speed of 70 km/h.

The trains will be equipped with a Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) system, which monitors the status of the vehicle's major devices in real-time to prevent failures and optimize maintenance cycles, and an Automatic Track Inspection (ATI) system, which can automatically check the track status with the vehicle's lower cameras and sensors, will be introduced to ensure optimal maintenance efficiency.

"After thorough preparation, we have surpassed global advanced railway companies to enter Singapore’s electric train market," a Hyundai Rotem source said. "We will supply high-quality, unmanned driving vehicles that can satisfy customers by combining technology and know-how accumulated by winning more than 2,000 orders for driverless vehicles."
