Korea Electric Power Corp. said on Feb. 18 that it held a ceremony to mark the completion of a pilot K-BEMS export project for KEPCO-Small Business Cooperation at PUCMM University in Dominica.

The ceremony was attended by more than 100 guests, including Lee Jun-ho, head of KEPCO's renewable business division, Kim Byung-yeon, Korean ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Ángel Canó, chairman of the Dominican Republic National Energy Commission (CNE), and Alfredo, president of PUCMM.

K-BEMS (KEPCO Building Energy Management System) is an energy management system developed by KEPCO that enables energy efficiency and cost savings by proposing optimal energy mix by collecting, analyzing, and controlling various energy source usage information from customers, including electricity, gas, and heat, in real-time.

It is a cooperative project model of KEPCO-Small Business, which KEPCO conducted for 10 months with J&D Electronics, a company in Naju Energy Valley, and ESD, a local Korean company.

Starting with the newly completed Dominican PUCMM University, KEPCO plans to build K-BEMS in local businesses and hotels in the future to maximize energy efficiency by optimally controlling lighting, heating, and cooling facilities.

"The Dominican Republic has the highest economic growth rate in Latin America, and it is urgent for efficient energy management as electricity demand is increasing due to rapid economic development," said Ángel Canó, president of CNE, who attended the ceremony.

Meanwhile, Lee Jun-ho, head of KEPCO's renewable business division, said, "As the project laid the foundation for technological cooperation between Dominica and Korea, KEPCO will continue to cooperate to improve energy efficiency and spread renewable energy in the Dominican Republic."
