SK Telecom's 5G technology will be distributed to Europe. SK Telecom, which has been transferring technologies to Asia, has secured a bridgehead in Europe that can expand the scope of 5G activities worldwide.
SK Telecom and Deutsche Telekom, the largest telecommunication company in Europe, announced on Feb. 27 that they will build '5G Radio Frequency (RF) relays' developed based on Korean technology in major German cities during the second quarter of this year and launch customer experience services.
'5G RF relay' is the key equipment that receives 5G transmission from outdoor base stations and amplifies and spreads 5G coverage to indoor areas that are difficult to reach, such as buildings, tunnels and underground spaces.
SK Telecom`s 5G RF relay has shown high interest in the technology in Germany and Europe, where wired network environment is worse than Korea, as it has the advantage of relaying signals without wired network connections.
The '5G RF relay' has been installed in major buildings in Korea since last year. SK Telecom and Deutsche Telekom upgraded the relay to meet the 5G environment in Germany and Europe in January this year.
Starting this month, the two companies will conduct on-site testing of relays, and starting from the second quarter of this year, they will provide customer experience services to 200 customers in Germany. To this end, Deutsche Telekom started recruiting participants for individual and corporate customers from Feb. 27.
In the future, the two companies will analyze customer feedback and data obtained from customer experience services and optimize relays to 5G networks in Germany before commercializing them in Germany.
