SK Telecom will start 'super cooperation' for global commercialization of 5G MEC (mobile edge computing) technology.

SK Telecom announced on March 1 that it launched 'Telecom Edge Cloud TF' with nine global telecommunication companies, including Deutsche Telekom, EE, KDDI, Orange, Telefonica, Telecom Italy, China Unicom, Singtel, NTT DoCoMo, at the GSMA general assembly held in London on Feb. 24 (local time).

Global news agencies around the world have agreed to launch the Telecom Edge Cloud TF to speed up the commercialization of 5G MEC, a key technology that increases the performance of ultra-low latency services such as Cloud games, Smart Factory and Self-driving.

The Telecom Edge Cloud TF aims to commercialize the "5G MEC" technology globally through mutual links between "edge clouds" that each carrier is separately building. To this end, participating companies plan to conduct verification tests such as interworking and sharing of edge cloud technologies and services that each company has.

SK Telecom is the only carrier that has 5G-based edge cloud source technology and plans to strengthen its cooperative system with global carriers to lead the global commercialization of '5G MEC' technology.

Global cooperation is essential for enhancing the general purpose of "5G MEC" technology and services and for the rapid development of the technology ecosystem. For example, if intercarrier technology and service interconnection are not possible, service developers should go through a separate development process for each carrier's '5G MEC' system, even with the same service.

"SK Telecom has decided to expand cooperation with global partners to commercialize 5G MEC technology. We will continue to lead the development of 5G MEC technology ecosystem," said Lee Kang-won, head of SK Telecom's Cloud Labs.
