Hyundai Motor's plant in Montgomery, Alabama

An employee at its plant in Alabama died of the infection of new coronavirus, called the COVID-19, Hyundai Motor Co. said on April 6.

Hyundai Motor's plant in Montgomery, Alabama, has been shut down since March 18 when one worker was diagnosed as being positive for the COVID-19.

Hyundai Motor, however, said it cannot answer whether the employee was killed this time due to personal information. The Montgomery factory has about 3,000 employees.

The closure period of the Alabama plant was initially until the end of last month, but the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the U.S. has increased dramatically, extending once until April 10.

Hyundai Motor plans to restart the plant from April 13, but there is still a possibility that it could be re-extended in line with the COVID-19 proliferation trend. “Whether the extension will be made or not is flexible,” a Hyundai official said.

“We are constantly monitoring the situation in response to the spread of the COVID-19 and coordinating plans to resume production,” he added.
