Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) will sign a "Canada dismantling engineering support contract" with Canadian nuclear engineering company Kinectrics early this month to dispatch domestic nuclear dismantling specialists to the site of dismantling nuclear power plants in Canada.
It will be the first time that KHNP personnel to dismantle nuclear power plants will be sent abroad.
The contract, the first fruit of the MOU on the dismantling of nuclear power plants signed by KHNP and Kinectrics last year, began when Kinectrics praised the technicality of the Wolseong-1 pressure tube replacement and facility improvement work carried out by KHNP in the past and hoped to participate in similar projects.
Under the contract, five experts in the dismantling of nuclear power plants, including four KHNP and one partner company, will be paid by Kinectrics for a year and will carry out the management of dismantling waste and development of process projects at heavy water dismantling sites such as Bruce Nuclear Power Plant, Pickering Nuclear Power Plant, and Darlington Nuclear Power Plant in Canada.
KHNP and Kinectrics expect the deal will not only elevate the capabilities of the two companies' heavy water reactors by one notch, but also serve as the foundation for future projects that will allow them to jointly enter the global market in the future.
Kang Shin-sup, head of the post-nuclear power plant management department at KHNP, said, "We expect KHNP will not only increase its capacity to dismantle heavy water reactors in Korea based on this contract, but also contribute to fostering the ecosystem of the domestic nuclear power plant dismantling industry, including expanding its overseas market by gaining an upper hand in entering the global market and winning orders for similar projects."
