Samsung Heavy Industries has won a 253.6 billion won (some $207.8 million) order to build two LNG-powered VLCCs from a Bermuda shipping company. These ships are scheduled to be delivered sequentially by April 2022.
The LNG-powered VLCC is applied with "S-Fugas," an LNG fuel supply system independently developed by Samsung Heavy Industries, which can reduce 99 percent of sulfur oxides, 85 percent of nitrogen oxides and 25 percent of carbon dioxide among exhaust gases compared to the use of conventional diesel oil.
Accordingly, it can effectively respond to the IMO 2020 environmental regulations that have been in effect since this year.
In addition, Samsung Heavy Industries' leading eco-friendly smartness technologies will be applied, including various energy saving devices (ESDs) that improve the fuel efficiency of ships through control of seawater flow during operation, and "SVESSEL," a smart ship solution that automatically establishes an optimal operation plan to reduce fuel consumption.
Meanwhile, Samsung Heavy Industries has so far secured differentiated quality competitiveness in LNG fuel propulsion ships based on its experience in applying various types and materials of LNG fuel tanks and engines since 2012 to cope with the demand for eco-friendly ships under the IMO 2020 environmental regulations.
An official of Samsung Heavy Industries said, "LNG fuel-powered crude oil carriers have been mostly applied to medium-sized ships with 100,000 tons of fuel, and this order will be a turning point for expanding to super-large tankers."
He also added, "As we preoccupy the eco-friendly VLCC market, we will increase the number of orders as much as possible in the future.”
