Samsung Heavy Industries announced on May 28 that it has delivered the 150,000-ton shuttle tanker "Eagle Petrolina" to Singapore's shipping company AET Tankers.

Eagle Petrolina is equipped with SVESSEL, a smart ship solution developed by Samsung Heavy Industries with its own technology. It is the world's first shuttle tanker officially certified by DNV GL, a Norwegian and German classification.

DNV GL is a world-class certification body that newly defines the technical requirements for the latest smart ships in November 2018 and grants "CG-0508 SMARTSHIP DESCRIPTIVE NOTATION" to ships that have passed strict screening.

The Eagle Petrolina can be provided with information such as the route of operation, engine power and ship inclination (Trim) that can provide optimal fuel economy through the SVESSEL.

Operations information such as fuel consumption and CO2 emissions can also be monitored in real time, enabling response to environmental regulations and economic driving.

In addition, land control offices can check the operation information of ships in real time, making it easier to support and manage the ships concerned, which is expected to reduce operating costs.

"Samsung Heavy Industries and the latest smart-ship technology under development will provide the safety of the technology to the ship's owner, while providing the most economically viable solution to tighter environmental regulations and a shortage of crew members," said Vidar Dolonen, CEO of DNV GL Korea.

Meanwhile, Samsung Heavy Industries is conducting joint research with DNV GL to secure the latest autonomous ship technology that can drastically reduce the number of people on board by 2022 to further enhance its competitiveness in smart ship technology.
