Enzychem Life Sciences announced on June 4 that it is preparing for the second final announcement of the Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH) project and the second evaluation of the NASA project that the U.S. government is propelling to protect the life of astronauts exposed to radiation for a long time.

Since early 2020, Enzychem Life Sciences has been working with leading U.S. university research institutes to develop the EC-18 Space Radiation (GCR) defense-treatment, including the NASA project to develop risk reduction technology related to long-term space flight and the project to develop countermeasure to GCR exposure in the risk of being exposed to in-flight space radiation and human-based models.

The two programs will be selected through two stages of screening, and TRISH will select four of the research proposal consortiums in August and NASA will select four to five teams later this year. Enzychem Life Sciences is waiting for the second final announcement after the first selection of the TRISH project.

For the NASA project, it passed the first gate last week and plans to submit its second research proposal in July.

With SpaceX's recent success in its first manned mission in the private sector and docking the International Space Station (ISS), attention is focused on the "space radiation" that must be addressed before traveling to Mars.

Unlike normal radiation (X-rays and gamma rays), "space radiation" consists of high energy protons and high energy nuclear components of cosmic rays, which can cause fatal damage to the human body even at low dose rates.

NASA and TRISH are currently working with global leading companies in various fields to develop new shielding materials, space radiation defense and treatments, although prolonged exposure to space radiation during space flights is feared to seriously damage bone marrow, blood vessels, central nervous system and gastrointestinal tissue, and increase the risk of tumors.

Enzychem Life Sciences proposed the development of single or multiple radiation defenses and treatments for ionizing radiation, recognizing the risks of acute and chronic GCR exposure to related tissue functions, identifying biomarkers that can be quantified by mitigating aging or damaged tissue with 'EC-18', and using human models that mimic vessels, bone marrow, and central nervous systems as TRISH tasks.

To NASA, it has proposed the preventive effect of EC-18 on in-flight food poisoning infections that can occur during manned missions as its study goal.
