On July 19, ETRI officially announced that they succeeded to develop and commercialize 'Germanium on silicon Photo-Detector(PD).'' This future leading device based on 'Silicon photonics optical' enables the future computer, the next generation network and date optical communication. With this, the light-silicon communications era has begun.
Since this device has achieved the best performance ever, it will be published in IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, the international authoritative academic journal and in Optics Express. Also it is pending three international patents. It will be exhibited at ECOC, a famous international exhibition will be held in September in Torino, Italy as well.
The development of 'High-performance Germanium on silicon PD' is significant. It is able to perform the whole production process in ETRI silicon Fab, single integrated with silicon IS in the future. And it is widely able to be applied within things such as, future computer industries, telecommunications components industry, sensors, automotive, mobile devices and displays.
As the core technology of light-Silicon Technology, the 'High-performance Germanium on silicon PD ' fulfills performance and mass production at the same time. Therefore it is expected to lead the domestic market and preoccupy the world market. It can convert the high cost 'optoelectronic devices' based on compound semiconductor material to high -performance and low-cost 'optical devices.'
Meanwhile, on July 19, ETRI signed a technology transfer agreement with Inzicontrols Co.,Ltd. for 'Ge-on-sillicon PD.'
