Mayor of Seoul, Oh Se-hoon

When the ancient egyptians set out to make the great pyramids they took the time to select a site, materials and tradespeople, very carefully, before constructing the basis of what has turned into one of the most iconic sights that has survived, dazzled and amazed visitors and TV watchers right up until today.

But what of that TV we first saw this most elaborate manmade construction on  How did they set about creating the base for that  The answer to this question lies in semiconductors and this lies in science, more specifically, physics.

Without getting too abstract, there are two ways that scientists can make semiconductors.  The first one involves electrons carrying current and the second involves positively charging over specially designed holes in materials.  It is the discoveries in this physics field that have created the basis for LED, new computers, phones, in fact most of our electronic goods.

Consumer manufacturers don't simply make a discovery in this field of physics and sit back and commercialise, the field is so competitive and the science, for want of a better expression, so edgy that continual re-experimentation and then refinement is conducted for both the sake of science and for lucrative commercial competitive advantages.

Such is the prestigiousness and importance of this science that Korean scientists had tried for four years to lure the event to Korea before victory.  Mr Seung Joo Lee a conference program chair and professor at Dongguk University said that this year's Seoul based 30th International Conference on the Physics of Semiconductors is also a chance to rebutt a comment made to Korean scientists while bidding in the previous two conference periods.  That is, 'Korea has wonderful technology but no physics.'  A statement made over four years ago that does not fit today's Korea, in fact a statement that may now seem delusional.  So rebutt is precisely what the attending Korean physicists and commercialised companies exhibiting the conference are having the honor of doing very well.

Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Byong Man Ahn

Remember the goods and services that this science pertains to and the transferrability of the discoveries that are made.  Noone wants these scientists to stop because a lot else would too.  For example, Korea has recently announced that through Ministry of Education, Science and Technology funding that scientists have increased the efficiency of LED and this is good news for lighting, the environment, computing and TVs in one fair swoop.

The conference runs until the 30th July and one day attendance is possible.  The event was opened officially this Monday morning by Byong Man Ahn, Minister of Education, Science and Technology whom actually made the comment that, as you read this, may be on the tip of your tongue, 'this science is leading the advance of the nanoscience era.' Also opening the conference was Young-Pak, Lee, President of the Korean Physics Society, Yasuhilo Arakawa, a program co-chair and Klaus Von Klitzing, Nobel prize recipient in 1985.

Yesterday conference attendants enjoyed a Nobel forum that featured four Nobel prize recipients in this field and in the evening the Mayor of Seoul hosted a welcome dinner at the Coex for all faculty and related commercial attendants.
