When people order food through an app, self-driving robots deliver food.
SK Telecom made an announcement on August 4 that it has signed a cooperation with Woowa brothers in 5G Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) and Smart Robot-based businesses to expand 5G-based hyper-connected services and secure leading technology in edge cloud.
Through this cooperation, the two companies plan to build a new concept of unmanned distribution system by combining SK Telecom's 5G MEC cloud platform with Woowa brothers' smart robot delivery service.
The two companies are planning to increase service stability and precision by upgrading delivery services using 5G MEC and cloud based on outdoor self-driving delivery robot "Dilly Drive" of elegant brothers that are currently operated based on LTE network in Gwanggyo, Suwon, Gyeonggi Province.
The Woowa brothers operate indoor self-driving serving robot "Dilly Plate," indoor self-driving floor-to-floor mobile delivery robot "Dilly Tower," and outdoor self-driving delivery robot "Dilly Drive."
If these are combined with SK Telecom's 5G MEC, it is expected that more detailed autonomous driving will be possible.
SK Telecom and Woowa brothers have been conducting tests to apply 5G MEC to "Dilly Drive" since June at Konkuk University's Seoul campus.
The two companies said that they have achieved significant improvements in the stability and remote control efficiency of the "Dilly Drive" through demonstration work in the 5G MEC environment.
Through the agreement, the two companies plan to strengthen related services so that customers can receive goods with confidence in non-face-to-face situations.
It will push for improved delivery convenience and cost reduction by putting delivery robots in places where it is difficult to enter vehicles or by allowing robots to perform their duties at times when deliverymen are difficult to visit in person.
