Recent research has reported that 95 percent of college students have a computer and 88 percent own a mobile phone.  In parallel with that, the usage of Smartphones among the students is broadening. It implies the facts that a school campus is the place for communication and connection and a school needs to support the interchange with proper technology support.

Seoul National University (SNU) engages in the trend of informationalization since they are aware well of this trend. SNU already induced a super computer named 5Tflops in 2005, and operates each kinds of server which provides computing power in the campus such as 'web hosting', 'server hosting'. Also they securely store data with the dual auto-backup and service the campus mails to about 10 thousand of its constituents including some graduates.

In June 2008, SNU established an IT service center to arrange the IT integration into a 'One-Stop service' targeting members of the university. The center carries out PC lab inspections for free as well as all the IT consultation, which amounts to 21 thousand cases per year.

Han Joon-koo, CIO of Office of Information Systems and Technology and director of SNU Computer Center

To learn more about SNU's informationalization, IT Times interviewed Han Joon-koo, CIO of Office of Information Systems and Technology and director of SNU Computer Center in Seoul National University.

CIO Han explained the present status of Informationalization in the campus. He said, "Office of Information Systems and Technology (OIST) has been seeking the development of information in the areas, such as education, administration, security, and convenience for users."

As a matter of fact, the Office of Information Systems and Technology has equipped a screen magnification mouse and a silicon keyboard in the I-Space, which is located in the first floor of the office. And it is intentded to support the information utilization of the students with disabilities. During the fall semester of 2010, English operation systems will be supplied for foreign students on campus.

SNU has also made software license agreements with MS Windows, Office, SAS, PASW(ex SPSS) and Hangul 2010 to eradicate the illegal use of the software used by many people around the campus and provide the software to students free of charge.

Besides that, SNS embodies and develops informationalization via its e-library in the central library, administrative information, information security, eTL (e-Teaching and Learning).

He stated, "We try to create a healthy information culture." The schools is making valiant efforts towards full-on IT integration.

Building up the U-Campus in Response to Change

Currently the Wireless Lan of SNU is fairly well-structured. SNU is set with SNU WiFi, KT Nespot (Partly free) and KT WiMax, as known as WiBro (Charged).

SNU WiFi is available in 369 spots in the centric area of Lecture Theater and nearby public places. It was replaced and enlarged in 2006, and it covers 3 to 5 percent of the campus. In the mean time KT WiFi was built in 2004 throughout 1,583 spots on campus. It covers 30 percent of the campus at the moment. Even though the usage of the KT Nespot is charged, SNU is willing to buy a thousand IDs for their students and provides them without any charge. The lending rate for the net spot is 100 percent and it certainly gets positive responses from students.

At the same time, KT WiBro covers the entire campus. There are 1,610 subscribers on campus and OIST has been supporting 50 percent of the fees since August 2007.

Due to the popularity of Smartphones, the demand for WiFi keeps increasing. Therefore, SNU plans to secure easy accessibility for various mobile devices and build an information sharing system the considers the priority for mobility and provides useful mobile contents. An in-depth discussion about these plans will be conducted within the university soon.

Networks on campus and private information security

Investments for the information security have been increasing, but security incidents are still keeping pace. It is comforting that the network is relatively secure thanks to the expansion of information and security systems. However, due to lax management for private PCs, viruses and worms infiltrate systems frequently and account for 95 percent of all accidents. Not only do they threaten secure network operations, they can also lead to a decline in trust for the school. Therefore, OIST supplies the package, 'PC security S/W', which is an auto-patch system, vaccine management system and PC security vulnerability notification system. And from this upcoming October, installment of S/W will be obligatory on campus. With this, SNU is promoting the production of security education videos and leaflets.

In the near future, each college and institute will be managed by web hosting which support the operation of web pages through an established account on the server computer. Campus servers will be carried by server hosting under the same format as apartments operating the services. From this year, SNU is strengthening monitoring to defend against attacks from off campus.

Information services of Global SNU, to enter the top 10 university

SNU is a small world after all. There are already 211 of foreign professors and 3,760 foreign students teaching and studying on campus. This is a 500 percent increase from 2006. Accordingly, SNU is planning to propel the globalization to attract 900 foreign instructors by 2025. Also SNU is trying to increase the number of foreign students up to 30 percent of total enrollment. As a reflection of this, an extension order for English services is flooding. This year, OIST will promote two major English projects. First is the English Portal Service. This service will be available from this September. It sets out to improve web accessibility and can be accessed with various user interfaces.

Second is the opening of the Academic Administration System in English. In years past, foreigners could be informed only individually from a department, but soon they will be able to obtain information conveniently via an open and extended window.

Information Exchange Regime Proposal with Leading Global Universities

Seoul National University has joined EDUCAUSE to exchange information harmoniously. EDUCAUSE is a nonprofit association with the mission to advance higher education by promoting the intelligent use of information technology. Currently, more than 2,200 colleges, universities, and educational organization are involved in the association, along with 250 related corporations.

In addition, SNU operates KREN - Korean Education Network. KREN is a non-profit network that provides internet service to local universities, educational institutions and educational administration through a dedicated line and it supports information and communication educational research activities through international integration.

KREN also provides IT training to 500 executives in domestic universities in computer organization. They perform 8 to 10 studies each year, the results of which are shared with all members of the university.
