Green Korea Leading the World

Prime Minister Han Seung-soo hosted the third Green Growth Committee and discussed how to become a leading country in the Green

The Green Growth Commission on May 13 finalized an action plan for the Green New Deal to implement the Low Carbon, Green Growth policy. To this end, the government will inject a total amount of 4.2 trillion won (US$3.31 billion) from this year until 2013. When it is completed, this project is expected to produce 7.5 trillion won (US$5.93 billion) in economic effects, create 52,000 new jobs, and reduce carbon emissions by 18 million tons.

The government planned a Green IT National Project to become a leading country in green IT. The project has nine core tasks from two fields - Green of IT and Green by IT.

The Green of IT strategy is choosing three top products – PCs, displays, and servers – to develop as Green IT products. In addition, the strategy involved a plan to establish gigabit Internet infrastructure, which is ten times faster than the existing Internet infrastructure, by 2012. It also plans to develop the highly efficient technology of the Internet Data Center (IDC).

The Green by IT strategy is about the transformation of society into a low carbon usage society using IT. It plans to expand the rate of telecommuting in the public sector from 2.4 percent this year to 20 percent by 2013, and 30 percent by 2020. In addition, it plans to make a carbon-free commute system using bicycles; and a paper-free business and education environment using netbooks, e-paper, electronic boards, and IPTV. There are also strategies to use IPTV together with remote medical systems to reduce the rate that people visit clinics by 15 percent.  IPTV can also be used to check the power usage of homes which use a Smart Grid combined with a Home Network System. Moreover, the strategy also includes a plan to make Social Overhead Capital such as public roads more green, build smart transportation and distribution systems, and create a smart environment monitoring system.
