What will IMID shoot at in the October sky this year For a decade IMID has been functioning more as a concession stand alongside a famous electronics show, where people with common interests assemble to nourish their brains before witnessing the next step of Samsung and LG displays. The 11th International Meeting on Information Display suggests that the meeting has strengthened its scale and quality by collecting an increased number of research papers abroad. This year, almost twice as many research papers were submitted from the US as well as from England. IMID is organized by the Korean Information Display Society, Korea Display Industry Association, the Society for Information Display, and DisplaySearch. IT Times interviewed the three stars Kwon Oh-Kyong, general chair of IMID 2011; Yoon Tae-Hoon, executive committee chair; and Lee Byoungho, technical program chair - to learn a tad about the upcoming IMID and the display industry today.

Catch Me If You Can

Samsung and LG - as if icebreakers in the tripping display industry - have been pushing the market through ice-covered waters with their strengthened hull, an ice-clearing shape, and power. Before the sun comes, the display industry is to face another challenge: rising China. Such insight comes from Academic Vice-President of Hanyang University Kwon Oh-Kyong who believes that the current glory is accredited to plutocratic enterprises like Samsung, Hyundai, and LG that made the right investments at the right time. "Due to their fast moves, Korea still plays the vital role in the global display industry. Korean AMOLED products penetrate 98 percent of the current global display market, LCD 54 percent, and PDP 60 percent. The problem is, however, how long can Korea be on top of the line"

"It is evident that China has already caught up with us. Their government is highly supportive to build strong manpower as well as the enterprises. Korea, on the other hand - in spite of Samsung and LG's risk management - the business is still at a deficit because the amount they put in as an investment for research and development exceeds the amount of their profit," Kwon said. Some countries including China view the display industry as a sprout that requires extra attention and support to grow, while to Korea it is rather a mighty tree that withstands all kinds of hardships on its own. But a decade from now, who could be the winner

"Beyond the uncertainty of the global market, what is urgently addressed in the academic perspective is the shortage of labor. The president Kwon Young-soo of LG Display supported us recently to open a Display School this summer. Korean Information Display Society(KIDS)  is starting core programs in which 500 students attended already. Those who excel at these summer courses get a privilege to work for LG Display after graduation. Another effort the display industry and the KIDS together are putting is a whitepaper on displays. By the end of this year, close to 400 pages will record what has been done and what is to be done in the display industry," explained Kwon. He believes that differentiation is the key, and the creativity comes from good education. Korea must now plant seeds that will someday grow into mighty trees, and it can no longer be the single-handed effort of Samsung and LG. Here, IMID is expected to bring hope and change to the current market status.

Conference Scope at IMID 2011

The IMID will be held from October 11 through 15 at KINTEX in Korea. The exhibition will provide the best opportunity for exhibitors in the world to reach a large and diverse audience of information displays. "In IMID 2010, 365 booths were exhibited by 101 companies and over 55,000 people visited the booths to find state-of-the-art information on the latest developments in information displays such as LCDs, PDPs, OLEDs, flexible displays, 3D displays, display processing, and display processing equipment, materials, and components. More participants and visitors are expected this year," said Lee Byoung-ho, technical program chair of the IMID.

Ahn Seungkwon, President and CTO of LG Electronics, will give a keynote speech this year regarding to the title Value Innovation with 3D Technology (Futuristic Technology). In this speech, in-depth studies of glasses-free 3D, auto stereoscopic display, ultra definition, hologram type, real 3D, and large OLED TV, as well as value propositions with 3D technology including 3D TV, mobile 3D, and 3D projectors will be covered.

Dr. Yoon introduced David Morton, program manager of flexible displays and electronics for the sensors and electronic devices. He is also titled as a director of the United States Army research laboratory. "Flexible displays were first developed in America for military purposes. Flexible displays were supposed to increase the efficiency of communication between soldiers. From an army research laboratory research and development is now carried on at the university labs. Since Dr. Morton used to be the flexible research fund manager, he has close connections with flexible display industries and businesses. His visit, thus, is significant and his keynote speech is already making great expectations.

Johan Feenstra, CEO of Samsung LCD Netherlands R&D Center BV., will speak on Merging eReaders and Tablets with Liquavista Technology. He will discuss the technologies used in the markets of eReaders and tablets, with a focus on Liquavista technology. These electrowetting displays bring the best of both worlds together, combining low power and readability with video and color capacity.

The highlight of the last year's conference topic was photovoltaics and solar cells. "Although solar cells and displays are two different areas, the manufacturing process and scale of the two share similarity. Based on the common ground, not only the expansion of knowledge would take the place, but it could also spark up the fresh inspiration for both industries," Dr. Yoon said.  He continued to explain, "Annual display meetings are held in France, Japan, and Korea. The participants of IMID have been gradually increasing due to the highly comparative presentations given at the conference."

This year, many research papers are collected from abroad in the areas of field emission displays and technologies, lighting and extraction technologies, photovoltaics, and projection and public displays. Outstanding papers among all the papers submitted to IMID 2011 will be selected for the Awards of Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Merck, and KIDS. In addition, Conference Chairman Awards for excellent poster presentation will be presented.

Dr. Kwon Oh-Kyong said, "The future key lies in creativity. Killer applications could be everywhere we turn around. Picture the billboards in New York City. What if we could advertisement all of the billboards in New York at once with a simple solution of total control advertisement system We could top our wireless technology on the high definition flat screens to start a new history of the billboards."
