<em>Smart ICE: interactive climate control energy system</em>

Ms. Thrift invested her dear USD 300 dollars on a gadget called Smart ICE
to save the energy and "cool the Earth." She placed it on her refrigerator to have frequent access to the device. . The first thing she ever tried was its simulation function. She chose a refrigerator, washing machine, television, and all the other electronics in her house and ran the simulation program to predict the next month's electricity bill. The record not only roughly calculated the bill of the month, but it also showed how much carbon dioxide was going to be emitted. A few hours later, she got curious how much electricity bill her neighbors were paying for the same-spaced unit. There she realized that the residents in her building were paying USD 40 less than her per month. According to the graph, if Ms. Thrift was to save 1 kw, she was to pay 77,000 won rather than paying 110,000 won for the bill! "How am I going to use a kilowatt less than last month" Ms. Thrift questioned herself. Just then, she got the alert message from a real-time processing service, notifying her that this is the peak time of electricity usage. She immediately double-checked all the running electrical appliances in the house and made sure none of them were running unnecessarily. Then the amount of energy she was using was marked in green, representing a saving mode. Using the best of its memo function, she wrote to the family, "We can cool the Earth."

Nation's noted green IT company, Wooam Corporation, recently released its advanced green technology product, Smart ICE (interactive climate control energy system) to provide a total energy savings solution to its users. But the real reason of this company's nomination to the top 30 software companies of Korea is on its very first product, eConference - a solution that has been widely used and loved by the country for a decade.

A decade Long Single-handed Effort

<em>Anne Song, Chairman and CEO of Wooam Corp.</em>

Anne Song, Chairman and CEO of Wooam, envisioned to create package software which would make her company to sell a license. The company's ten year lasting research and development on eConference is noteworthy to many SMEs in Korea. During the process of constant development, Wooam hit the big time with its branched service eDocushare solution.  eDocushare is still well-loved by government bodies and regional offices. The concept of a paperless meeting meant money savings for government bodies and the companies who otherwise would be printing hundreds of sheets of paper for different meetings per week.

Wooam's eDocushare does not require installation and runs on the web browser itself. It helps regular and non-regular business meetings that require business reports and other documents. The system is capable of sharing documents from MS Office 2010, Hangul 2010, PDF files, images, and text files. It allows word processing features and a memo function. While in meetings the program is capable of reading documents by pages, synchronizing the presentation screen, and saving the documents into a PDF file. Participants do not require software for the documents and the program also runs on Android-based devices. The company seeks growth in sales this year with the emergence of smart pads. Wooam has recently created an application and is seeking to sell it as a service. "We'd like to find overseas partners that can share profits with us by collaborating our technology with their marketing skills."

When a Company Makes Top-of-the-Line Software

Contrary to other companies during the IMF economy crisis, CEO Song had invested heavily into R&D, as a result being an award-winning RAVCOMS, a multimedia solution capable of document sharing, video-conferences, and eSeminars. "The significance of my company lies in the fact that we dug a single well for ten years. We invest about a million dollars a year in research and development. Part of it comes from government funds and matching funds. We are involved in every smart solution R&D while continuously developing an eConference solution. Our company is part of a Smart Grid R&D Cluster as the first ever Korean participant. Twelve European companies are joined in this cluster to research and develop smart grid solutions together," CEO Song said. He continued by saying, "We heavily focus on research and development compared to other SMEs. My company seeks to be the frontier that strives for excellence in our strong areas. I feel a huge sense of accomplishment by doing so. Back in 2003, a buyer from McSteel Service USA in Hawaii sent me an invitation letter and an airplane ticket. All credited to the innovative software, I received the best kind of hospitality from a buyer and was offered with a good business proposal. What I was amazed at this visit in the States was that they took our eConference system in a very sensational way. They placed the voice controller on the walls, camera in the ceiling, and used this same software we use in Korea with a huge projector. And this was back in 2003. The speaker freely moved and the controller on the wall kept on tracking the speaker-in-motion's voice. What a brilliant marketer, right"

CEO Song learned from previous experiences that the key point of business overseas is in problem-solving. "There will always be problems with software. Rather than high technology itself, the importance is in how fast we can deal with crises. For this fast response solution, our company has long been developing remote control and download-free solutions. Our future focus will continuously lie on minimizing the maintenance/repair solutions."

Fruits the Ten Years of History Bear

The eConference -download free solution- is capable of a video conference up to 50 people. A remote real time video conference, classes, and call centers can be operated, and it also provides document sharing, screen sharing, and video sharing. Documents can be synchronized and an automated QoS is adapted which considers the network environment. The program has an intuitive user interface.

eClips allow the user to manage their personal and meeting schedules by the day, week, and month. It also provides a personal storage place and is linked to a messenger. In addition, all the information regarding meetings can be read, such as list of meetings, agenda regarding last meetings, directions from the last meeting, and a schedule for personal meetings. It also provides meeting reservation, statistics form the meeting, and an organization chart for the company.

Recently Wooam is trying to reform into a green growth solution company that produces high value products. CEO Song quoted "Korea is a high energy consuming country, first place in OECD. Excessive consuming comes from people not realizing that their energy bills are so high. In 2009 imports for energy was up to 90 billion dollars (10 trillion won). If we save 10%, the savings alone amount to a trillion won. The energy efficiency and savings is the core to a low carbon growth" As a result, Wooam produced Smart ICE, a smart grid solution that allows the ordinary home to monitor its current energy consuming condition.

CEO Song as the representative of the top Green IT company of the nation said, "Green and Growth are no longer contrary concepts. Carbon reducing technology, Electric cars and many other technologies that reduce energy consumption and loss is creating a new global Green Market. As Korea is an IT powerhouse, the combination of energy and IT like products such as the Smart Grid will lead Korea to the top in the global market."

The blueprint of the future

Then where is this Green IT Frontier placing its next footstep "Recently, Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) is integrating wired and wireless services. We are keeping up with this trend by developing a software that can be linked through PVX, embedding with IPT or hardware. For example, let's say that the high voice quality is not guaranteed with our eDocushare solution. Then why don't we use the phone line/ IP phone while using eDocushare By collaborating with PVX manufacturer, we will make embedded software. The problem is targeting the right timing in the market. Brain powers always is essential to pursue our vision as well," Song said.
